Shelters
In the event an evacuation is necessary, local officials will arrange with the Gray County Area Chapter of the Red Cross and The Salvation Army for a shelter to be opened.
About
The location of the shelter will depend on the type of emergency ad the shelter available to the community
The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army, in the State of Texas, has been vested with the responsibilities of shelter management.
They enter into agreements with schools, churches, and various others for us of their facilities. In some cases, church groups and civic organizations have personnel trained to handle shelter management and my even have the necessary equipment and supplies on hand.
If Evacuated
If you have to evacuate your home, you may go to the shelter.
In many cases, people tend to go to homes or relatives and friends or, in some cases, straight to a hotel.
This is normal and is factored into a community’s evacuation/shelter plan.
In Shelters
In the event you go to a designated shelter, you will be asked to complete a registration form which will be used for accountability purposes.
This is very important, as missing people can become a big problem following a major incident or actual disaster.
Relatives begin looking for their loved ones and try to locate them. They start calling the Red Cross or local officials. This is especially true when the national media coverage begins.
Needless to say, if you have to evacuate your home and go to a friend’s dwelling, call a family member and let them know that you are okay, and have them spread the word to other family members.
